When Love Isn't Enough to Make Someone Stay
Love. It isn't just a monosyllabic word. It's not merely a feeling that comes and goes.
It's something bigger than that. Something that reaches beyond ourselves, changes us, and sometimes leaves us wondering how something so beautiful can also hurt so deeply.
"Love is the most beautiful thing that can happen to us. It doesn't matter if we succeed or fail. The thing that matters is that we loved."
Of course, I'm here to talk about the other side: the painful side where they leave despite how much you love them. Even in that sense, I would say love is still beautiful. Wait. What did I just yap? Painful? Still beautiful?
No, I'm not out of my mind. I'm well aware of the ideas I'm laying out, and though they're contradictory, they still hold.
How is that possible? I mean, you love them truly and deeply, and then they leave, and it's still beautiful? I can prove my point.
Love Is About the Feelings
So you love them like hell, and then they leave you. But here's the thing: love is less about the person and more about what you feel for that person. The feelings associated with love can thrive even after they're gone.
It's not the person we love, but everything we feel when we're with them. We can keep those feelings with us, acknowledge them, and smile every day that we got to feel this thing called love.
Love is not about the person. It's about the feelings: pure feelings that we associate with someone, and that association is what we call "loving them."
Did Love Fail?
So, did love fail because they didn't stay? I don't think so.
Love did exactly what it was supposed to do. It made us feel something pure, something we didn't know we were capable of. The person leaving doesn't take that away. They can take their time, their presence, even their memory from our daily lives, but they can't take what we felt.
Those feelings were ours all along.
The Hurt Is Proof
Yes, it hurts. I'm not going to pretend it doesn't. But that hurt is just proof that the feeling was real.
You can't grieve something that never mattered.
Letting Them Go
So if someone leaves, let them. Keep the feelings safe, smile that you got to feel them at all, and let them grow into something that makes you a little softer, a little braver.
And if someday someone stays, you'll already know what to give them: the same pure love you've been carrying all along.
Because in the end, it doesn't matter if they stayed or left. The thing that matters is that we loved.
And that's the one thing that still makes me smile.
